Chemistry
Unit 1 Matter, Chemical Trends and Chemical Bonding
This unit describes classification of
matter, physical and chemical properties of substances, physical and chemical
changes. Periodic Table of Elements, Atomic Structure models, subatomic
particles and isotopes are discussed.
Students learn trends and patterns
in the Periodic Table for Atomic size, Ionization Energy and Electron
Affinity. Electronegativity and different types of Chemical Bonding are
described. Students discuss chemical nomenclature for ionic and covalent
compounds and write formulas of the substances.
Chapter 1
Elements and the Periodic Table
Chapter 2
Chemical Compounds and Bonding
Unit 2 Chemical Reactions
Different types of
chemical reactions are discussed. Students write and balance chemical
equations, identify type of reactions and determine the products. Various uses
of chemical reactions in industry are introduced and discussed.
Chapter 3 Synthesis, Decomposition and Combustion Reactions
Chapter 4 Displacement Reactions
Unit 3 Quantities in Chemical Reactions
This unit introduces to students the
Mole Concept and Avogadro constant,
calculations of number of moles, number of molecules and molar masses. The basic
types of chemical calculations: percentage composition of the substance
and isotopic abundance are introduced and performed. Empirical
formulas and Molecular formulas of the substances are discussed.
Stoichiometry method of calculation of
amount of substance involved in chemical reaction is explained. Problems with
limiting reactant and excess of the substance are introduced.
Students predict and calculate actual and theoretical yields of
reactions and solve different stoichiometry problems.
Chapter 5
Counting Atoms and Molecules: The Mole
Chapter 6 Proportions in Chemical Compounds
Chapter 7 Chemical Reactions and Stoichiometry
Unit 4 Solutions and Solubility
This unit describes different types of solutions and factors affecting
solubility of the substances. Different types of solution concentrations are
introduced: percent concentration, molar concentration, ppm and ppb. Students
calculate and determine theconcentration of solutions, investigate nature
of solubility, factors affecting rate of solubility and demonstrate
knowledge of solubility rules.
Reactions in solutions are discussed.
Students write molecular and ionic equations, predict products of different
types of reactions and formation of precipitates.
Acids and bases are discussed in
this unit. Students learn about strong and weak acids and bases, pH scale and
neutralization reactions. Arrhenius theory of acids and bases is introduced.
Physical and chemical properties of acids and bases, uses and safety rules are
discussed.
Chapter 8
Solutions and Their Properties
Chapter 9 Reactions in Aqueous Solutions
Chapter 10 Acids and Bases
Unit 5 Gases and Atmospheric Chemistry
This unit introduces to students Gas
Laws and gas behavior in physical and chemical processes. Students solve
various problems and apply Avogadro’s Law, Boyle’s Law,
Charles Law and Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures. Combined Gas Law
and Ideal Gas Law are discussed. Gas Stoichiometry problems are introduced
and performed.
Atmospheric Chemistry, pollution
problems and greenhouse gases are discussed as well as problems associated
with the Ozone Layer Depletion. Oxygen, nitrogen, helium and neon uses and
applications are described. .
